Deforest Howard Pickrel's dad was a butcher and so he took up this trade. He was born Oct 19,1877 in Gridley Iowa. His mother was Mary Jane and his dad was Howard. HE had one other 1/2 sibling, a step brother name unknown. They (he and grandma) lived on a farm in his early days at Emerson Iowa and then moved into town. Married to Lucinda Charlotte Boone/Kinsey. Lucinda was born in England and her family came here. Her mother died and dad took her 2 brothers and went on westward. She was adopted by her mothers sister and husband supposedly named Kinsey and they are supposed to be buried in a cemetary in Walnut Iowa. She told me she came to Iowa in a covered wagon from Illinois. NO other info on her yet. They had the following kids:
Esther born 5/19/1902. Esther married Leslie Kellenbarger and one month later he died of mennengitis. She never remarried. "Aunt Patty" was first a school teacher then worked in the laundry of a state home for the retarded. She was a wonderful, kind chubby lady that just loved kids. Her home was open to them and you could do just about anything there. I spent a summer with her and she helped me make doll clothes for my little sister on her tredle sewing machine. She also made wonderful sugar cookies and potato bread. She lived in Red Oak Iowa. She was a very religious lady. She died in an old folks home.
Dorothy 11/30/1909 Dorothy was a spinster and homely as sin. She had all the personality of a rock. Although she taught in San Diego special ed classes, at home she made fun of the kids and called them "little dummies". This did not impress me. Shemoved to Lincoln Nebr when she retired...for reasons known only to God. She also claimed to be very religious. OOOOkay...She died there.
Ellery came next and I cant find his birthdate. We called him Uncle Pick. His wife Ruth was a bit uppity so I didn't spend much time with her. They are still alive and live in Red Oak. They had 2 boys, Robert and Dennis. Ruth came next and I dont see her birthdate either. She married John Humphrey and had 3 children, Jack, Richard and Charlotte Ann. Ruth died in Wyoming, not sure when.
Raymond Edward was my step-father. He was born 3/12/1919. He died of cancer in 7/21/77. He was also a butcher. He was first married to Dorothy somebody and had a son named Donald Raymond. It was wartime and when he came back from the war she tried to give him his son, until she found out he was going to remarry. He spent a few summers with us, but his mother made dads life a living hell... He married my mother when I was 7 and my sister was 5. We went to live in Elk Horn Iowa where he had a meat locker until I graduated from High School. He eventually became a rep for Kent Feeds and lived in Sioux Rapids Iowa...mom still is there, she is now 80.
