Pickrel, Andrew "Andy" Andrew "Andy" Pickrel, 16, West Des Moines, Iowa, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, Friday (8/25/06), after a long battle with cancer. Andy was born in Lincoln, June 26, 1990. In 2000, his family moved to West Des Moines, where Andy attended West Des Moines Schools. He was a junior at Valley High School. Member, Point of Grace Church and very active in the youth ministry. He had volunteered for the Point of Grace children's ministry, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society.
Andy enjoyed playing soccer, basketball and football. His interests included playing video games, spending time with his family and friends, listening to music, playing hacky sac and playing with his new puppy, Zeus. He had a special interest in Japanese culture and Anime art. Andy attended Camp Quality for 10 years and was the recipient of a "Young Heroes" Medal of Honor award from the Nebraska National Guard for his continuous bravery during the early years of his battle with cancer. Andy touched many hearts during his life and had a special place in his heart for kids.
Andy leaves many to cherish his memories including: parents, Tom and Lynn; brother Lee and fiancee Bobbikae Bryant; sister, Kyla, all of West Des Moines; grandparents, Larry and Imogene Roscoe, Central City, Nina Pickrel, Clarks; great-grandmother, Sylvia Anderson, Central City; many uncles, aunts and cousins. Preceded in death by grandfather, William Pickrel; cousin, Jared Sprenger.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Point of Grace Church, Waukee, Iowa. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Friday, Ernst Funeral Home, Waukee.
