My uncles told me that if a German was writing it, it was usually done Piehl, and if a Pole was writing it, it was usually done Piel.Russians if they used Latin characters also seemed to use Piehl.

Got paperwork in lots of languages in the 1900-1906 period before they could get out.Boundaries were very fluid.
I have four spellings for Kalisch / Kalishe / Kalish / Kalisz.
There used to be a Piels beer in Pennsylvania.Haven't seen it since the 1980s, though.
