Prof. Samuel Pierpont LANGLEY (IV?) -- did he have PIERPONT ancestry?
He was quite a famous man:Harvard prof., physicist, astronomer, early aviation experimenter (his steam- powered, unmanned "Aerodrome" aircraft was the first powered, heavier-that-air aircraft to fly - 1896), Secretary of theSmithsonian Institution and namesake of Langley Air Force Base and the NASA Langley Research Center, both in my hometown of Hampton, VA.
S. P. LANGLEY was b. 1834 in Roxbury, MA andd. 1906 in Aiken, SC. His parents were SamuelLANGLEY (III ?) and Mary Sumner Williams --SUMNER another famous MA name.
If the roman numerals in his name are accurate, the PIERPONT connection was sometime in the 18th century. Roxbury was where the 17th c. STOWs and PIERPONTs hung outand intermarried.J. Pierpont MORGAN, the legendary financier, and the infamous Aaron BURR Jr. were among the descendants of John PIERPONT and Thankfull STOW; I am desc. from Thankfull's brother, the Rev. Samuel STOW; their parents were John STOW and Elizabeth BIGG(E) who emigrated to New England from Biddenden, Co. Kent around 1635.
