Peiffer/Piffer from PA to Darke and Miami co., OH Jacob from Baden
My Piffers (Peiffer and other spellings) start with Jacob Peiffer arr. in 1852 (orginally from Baden as listed on census records.) He marries a girl named Catharine born 21 Sep 1835 in PA - died 18 Mar 1891 Tipp City, buried in Maple Hill cem., Tipp City, Miami, OH. There is a record of her dated 9 June 1883 Catharine Pfifer, insanity, 07218. But when someone was trying to locate that record, nothing was found in the file. I'll have to try to locate the actual record.
Jacob was in the Civil War - service start date 20 sep 1861.
Jacob and Catharine had 2 known sons born in PA, John abt. 1858 and William E. 29 Jun 1861 (d: 21 Mar 1889 in Lima, Allen, OH, buried Maple Hill cem. Tipp City - his mother and wife and their young daughter are buried with same headstone).
3rd son of Jacob and Catharine is David A. Peifer born in Ohio. (on 1910 census: Newberry, Miami, OH he and wife last name is listed on online records as Reifer with alt. spelling Peifer).David and wife Hattie are in the 1900 Covington, MIami, OH census and 1910 and 1920 Newberry census. Their children are Carl E., Hazel B., Mildred M., Herbert G., Eva, adn Ceora. In 1930 D.A. Peiffer and wife Hattie and Harbert age 25 and Cleora age 15 are in Adams, Darke, OH.
This family starts in Ohio in the 1870 census: Adams, Darke, OH with Jacob Pifer, wife Catharine, sons John, William and David. 1880 census: Covington, Miami, OH, Jacob Piffer, Catharine, William and David.
I haven't been able to confirm anything about John and if he married.
William married 19 Oct 1884 in Tipp City to Louesa Dusickle (15 May 1867 Tippecanoe (Tipp City), Miami, OH - 5 Sep 1889 Tipp City). She is daughter of Rudolph Dusickle adn Rebecca Becl. They had Jennie May Piffer (13 Oct 1885 Tipp City - 14 Oct 1957 Dayton, Montgomery, OH buried in Dayton), and twin girls Minnie Irene and Maggie (Margaret) born 8 Feb 1887 in Tipp City. Minnie died 19 Jun 1889 and is buried with her parents in Maple Hill cem. Maggie married Raymond Rhinehart and died 27 May 1942. They are also buried in Maple Hill cem.
This family had a lot of tragedy. William was killed while at work in railroad yard in Lima, OH in 1889, a 2 months later wife Jennie dies of typhoid fever and daughter Minnie died of brain fever a month later. The surviving girls go to live with their mother's brother and his wife Fred and Matilda Duscikle. Jennie marries Jesse Carter Calloway in 1903 in Miami co. OH.
We had wondered what happened to Jacob Piffer/Peiffer. Last night I came across records for federal census records taken at 'national home for disabled volunteer soldiers' central branch in Dayton,OH. Everyone there is listed as 'inmate'. Jacob Peiffer was there at least from 1900 (on the census) thru 1920 (census) where he dies 19 feb 1920. He is buried as a vetran in the Dayton National cem. He had been Private Infantry. He died and was buried the same day.
If you have connections or information to this family, especially where Jacob came from and Catharine's family in PA before moving to Ohio, please respond.
Thanks,
Liz
