I am researching these folk from Darlington, particularly HARRY born in 1869. I have answered a couple of letters tonight about Yorkshire and Bolton Lancs. Pilkingtons but I will repeat them here for information.
I do not know if there is any link but I am researching the family of John Pilkington of Darlington C. Durham by his second marriage to Martha Hyde of Denton and Manchester. In 1869 they had a son Harry. they are listed in Darlington in the 1871 census but do not appear at all in 1881. Maybe they emigrated, maybe they died. John had a brother Edward, and a son Edward. I am assuming that their father was also an Edward. But what has happened to my Harry. I have just posted a letter with most of the details of my Pilkingtons to DEON PILKINGTON on the current page.
It is the repetition of the name Harry and Maud which you mention that makes me wonder.
Hello Deon, I too am seeking info. about a family who lived in DARLINGTON, Victoria Place in 1871. John Pilkington was a silversmith and his second wife was Martha Hyde whom John, a widower, married in 1867. John had a brother EDWARD and a son EDWARD PILKINGTON, both watchmakers. They feature in 1881 and 1891 Censuses. Edward had moved to Gainford, Co. Durham.
Martha Hyde's mother and sisters had lived in Openshaw, Manchester about 1855-1871 when they moved to Bolton. There were many other Pilkingtons living in Openshaw. Martha herself disappeared between 1851-1871. One of Martha's sister's, EMMA married William Hick in 1855. John and Martha, now aged forty, had a son called HARRY born in Darlington - he was not registered, born in 1869 thereabouts.
Other clues involve another John Pilkington age 45, a Watchmaker who had a nephew Harry Hick working with him, same age as little Harry Pilkington but born in Leeds. John, like his brother Edward, were born in HEIGHINGTON co. Durham.
More names; Edward, son by John's first wife, lived with his wife Mary Hannah nee Brown, at 63, Pensbury St. Darlington, also a watchmaker, had children:- Ernest William, , Herbert Bristow, Percy John and MAUD Mary.
In 1901, there is a HARRY PILKINGTON age 10, b. in Ryhope and living in Sunderland. In Sunderland are others; James, Joseph, and William also born in Ryhope.
Are these of any help or interest to anybody AND is there anybody who can help me please??
