I am descended from Pilkingtons in the same area - we may be cousins. Margaret, not herself a member of the family from who I am descended, appears in the 1841 census aged 1 (If her birthday were later in the year this still tallies with her having been born in 1839) She is the daughter of Richard and Hannah who are living in Chapel Street, Padiham. He is described as a labourer; older children were evidently working in the textile industry. In 1861, the same woman, I assume, as she is now 21 and gives her birthplace as Padiham, is a lodger in the house of William Bardsley, a pedlar. The house is on Downing Street in Royton, near Oldham She is described as a cotton piecer, is umarried and has an illegitimate son, Isaiah.
