My name is Joshua Leonard Pilkington, my father is Karl Leonard Pilkington and his father Ronald Leonard Pilkington. It has always been family tradition that any male descendant has the middle name Leonard, and although this is still the case, the meaning of this seems to be lost.
As I gather, the first (or at least first major recorded) Pilkington was named Leonard De Pilkington and so this tradition interests me greatly. I am taking this to mean that we are direct descendants in some way, although with the number of Pilkington families in the north, it interests me why this tradition seems restricted to our particular lineage if we have a common stem (although I could be grossly misinformed as I'm just starting to try and trace it all).
If anyone has any specific information about this aspect of the Pilkingtons, I would appreciate hearing from you. At least the last 3 generations of my family have been born in Salford (U.K.) and I know that Ron's wife, Doreen, had the maiden name Jones but I don't know further back than that.
