Do you know the lienage of Nicholas and Elizabeth Pinions son Robert? I believe that it is Possible some of this family migrated to Va and Nc .
Some of the same traits exhibited by Nicholas and his Children resurfaced in the Nc family some 200 years later during the 1860's.
I also notice the names Downs and Robards/Roberts associated with teh family in Connecticut. These same families were in western North Carolina.
I have long believed the Nc Pinions were French Huguenot and probabaly of Spanish Jewish ancestry.
Many of the Spanish Jews became Huguenots when they fled the inquistion.I believe the name is derived from the Pinion De Velez and Island between Soain and north africa.
The Names Nicholas appears in the North Carolina Pinion Family of Surry and Union County as do Thomas and Robert
