OCLC WORLD CAT: lists a document entitled “Pinckard Family.”This is a 4 page hand written document which lists births of children of William Greene Pinckard, 1783-1866 of Alton, Ill. Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois as well as the Allen County Library in Indiana have copies of this document. In a copy of this document, which I obtained, on page 1, under Father, William Greene Pinckard, there is a notation. His mothers’ maiden name was Lucy Greene and she was a sister of Gen. Nathaniel Greene of Revolutionary fame. This notation is also found in Family Tree Maker Vol. 2 Tree 3215. As children we were told that this person was one of our ancestors. William Green Pinckard’s mother was Lucy Coleman Green who married Nathaniel Pinckard in Virginia and died in Alton, Illinois. She was a descendent of Robert Green of Virginia. Gen. Greene was from New England. As far as we have been able to tell there was never any connection. There are many cases of families who identify themselves with General Greene but this family tale is not based upon facts. My sister, Ione McFarland Larson has been the family genealogist and she says there are many things about the Pinckard family she may not be sure of but of one thing she feels quite strongly. There is no connection between The Green family of Rhode Island and the Green family of Virginia.
