Picher was established in the 1910s to support the lead mining that was touched off by the explorations of Eagle-Picher (biggest lead strike in history, I believe). At that time, the company was headed by my great-grandfather, Oliver Shepard Picher (for whom I am named). He named some of the streets in the town after my grandfather and his brothers and sisters.
The family name used to be Pitcher, until my great-great-grandfather decided to change it. The reasons are lost in obscurity -- my grandfather says he did it out of spite for the rest of the family, but he somehow convinced his father and brother to change their names too (must've been a persuasive guy).
The Pitchers go back to Andrew Pitcher of Dorchester, MA.
Don't know of any Betzers in the family tree, but I've recently learned that the family mythology leaves out a lot of details (like a second wife and adopted daughter for my g-g-grandfather).Anything is possible.
