I'm descended from James Rowland BROWN and Margaret " Peggy " PITCHLYNN .The BROWN family was in Arkansas by 1818 in what was at one time stilla part of Indian Territory.James R. BROWN md. 1.) ____Locke 2.) Margaret " Peggy " PITCHLYNN .I am descended from their daughter Nancy Ann BROWN md. Cornelius SMITH in 1861 Ellis Co. , Texas .
In 1895 Thomas B. BROWN , the s/o James R. BROWN and Margaret " Peggy" PITCHLYNN , applied for Indian Citizenship in the Choctaw/Chickasaw Nation and was accepted as ordered by the US Gov. but the Chickasaw/Choctaw Indian Commission appealed this decision and he was denied in 1893/4 . He applied for Citizenship under the descendancy of John " Jack" PITCHLYNN , as taught to him by his mother. I have the Court Testimony by both witnesses for Plaintiff and defendants , Choctaw/Chickasaw Nation , and Rhoda ( PITCHLYNN ) HOWELL testified against him as she had never heard of him or his mother .
As far as I can tell , being as PITCHLYNN is a very uncommon name , there are only three ( 3 ) sources for the descent of Margaret " Peggy " PITCHLYNN .
1.) Granddaughter of Maj. John Pitchlynn
2.) Freedman slaves who took on the name PITCHLYNN as many slaves did then
3.) Chafu-ta-ya - A Full blood Choctaw who adopted PITCHLYNN name as his own( this has been ruled out as possibilty . Chafu-ta-ya wasn't even born til after Margaret " Peggy" PITCHLYNN was , which makes connection impossible .)
4.)Another possibilty is , she was married to a PITCHLYNN before she married James R.BROWN and thenW.W. WRIGHT.
I have no proof that James R. BROWN was ever married to either of these women as the only proof I can find comes from books . Marriage licenses for 1833-1850 are missing for ARK.
Another PITCHLYNN researcher and I feel sure she is connected to the Maj. John PITCHLYNN and Rhoda FOLSOM line , but we cannot find the connection .
If anyone can help with this family I would appreciate it . Margaret " Peggy" PITCHLYNN is a big mystery .
