KATRINA PITTS HEATHERLY 11/09/02
Hi Katrina, I don't really know much about Lemuel. My g-grandfather was William Patten Pitts, born May 5, 1872 and died Nov. 13,1950. His obit states that his parents were Lemuel and Nancy Palmer Pitts and that he was a native of Oconee Co.,(SC). I also was looking through an old Bible of my grandparents and on the family page it states that William's father was Lemuel Pitts, but no name islisted for his mother. I believe that this Nancy Palmer (or whoever his mother was may have died young when William was a child.) I can't find a Lemuel Pitts married to a Nancy Palmer any where. I've found several Lemuel Pitts but can't make a definite connection with any certain one. There is a Lemuel Pitts on the 1880 Oconee Co., SC census with Ester Grant as concubine. Children are Billy, (William?) son, age 6; Alice, dau., 6; Mary B., dau. 5; Buddy, son, 1. This one seems a good possibility. By 1900 this family has moved to Walker Co., GA. In 1870, Anderson Co., SC there is a Lemuel Pitts, single, age 20, croping, living next door to a Noah Grant. Probably the same Lemuel as above. In 1850 Pickens District there is a Lemuel Pitts age 11, with parents William and Francis. But is the Lemuel that is in Anderson Co. in 1870 and later in Oconee Co. and Walker Co., with Ester Grant? I've checked wills and probate in Oconee and Pickens Counties and haven't found any good possibilites yet. Since I don't have any definite birthdate or age for Lemuel I'm having to estimate when he was probably born.
Do you have any spouses or children for the Lemuel, son of William and Mary, in your line? I'm sure I've seen this William and Mary on censuses during my searching. I've also had some references to the Henry Martin Pitts. I don't believe that Henry Martin Pitts is my Lemuel's father. It's just a gut feeling, so I could be wrong. I don't have any proof either way. I would appreciate any light you could shed on this puzzle. You can e-mail me direct at: [email protected]
Thanks, Debbie
