Judge Thomas Playford Dead.
Thomas PLAYFORD, one of the early settlers and a most highly respected citizen of Burlingame, died Tuesday night at 11:00 o'clock from the effects of a stroke of paralysis received on Wednesday of last week. His funeral took place yesterday from the Baptist church, Rev. W.P. HILLYER officiating, after which the Odd Fellows took charge of the remains of their departed brother and they were tenderly laid to rest with the honors of that benevolent order. Thomas PLAYFORD came to Burlingame April 3rd, 1857, and worked at his trade, that of a shoemaker, for the first six years. He then purchased a farm one mile north of town which he worked for five years. In 1868 Mr. PLAYFORD sold his farm and entered the drug business in a frame building at the corner of Santa Fe avenue and Dakota street where he continued until the building of the Union Hall block when he purchased one of the store rooms and a half interest in the hall above. Here he continued the business until the death of his son, J.J. PLAYFORD, when he sold out and quit. Mr. PLAYFORD was born in Sussex county, England, April 15th, 1818, making him seventy-nine years of age his last birthday. When but eleven years of age he came to America with his parents who located at Bath, New York. Some time afterward they moved to Geneva, N.ew York, where Mr. PLAYFORD finished his shoemaker's trade and at which place he was married, in 1840, to Miss Elizabeth JEFFREY, a native of Leicestershire, England. Four children were born to them all of whom are dead. In 1849 his wife died and in 1850 he was married again at the same place to Miss Lydia A. OSBOURNE. His second wife died in Burlingame several years ago. Deceased was elected probabte judge of Osage county in 1868. He was active in assisting the loyal cause during the early days and during the war was a member of the Osage County Battallion.
