I have a copy of the article in Lighthouse Digest- July 2001- The Lighthouse Man Who Saved America's History- by Timothy Harrison-
Stephen Pleasanton- US Lighthouse Service- 1820- 1852 " Pleasanton was a civil service employee who worked his way up to the position of Fifth Auditor of the US Treasury, a postion at the time which was also responsible for overseeing all the aids to navigation in the United State of America."
In 1814 British troops landed in Maryland. Pleasanton got the message and proceeded to bag up as many historical documents as possible. He then got them to a safe farmhouse in Leesburg, Va. as Washington DC burned.
E-mail me and I'll land mail out the article. Lynne A. Jones firstname.lastname@example.org
