There was a THOMAS ROLFE/RELFE in NC whom many think to be the same person as Thomas Rolfe of VA (dob 1615) son of Pocahontas and John Rolfe. Compelling evidence for this viewpoint is given in Moore, Elizabeth Vann & Richard Slatten's "The Descendants of Pocahontas: An Unclosed Case," _Magazine of Virginia Genealogy August_,1985. I have mentioned this article in the past & someone asked then where a copy could be obtained.
This Thomas had sons Thomas, William, and possibly a John.Descendancy from these sons would fit some of those families who have the tradition of being from Pocahontas, yet can't show a Bolling ancestor.
I just did a search on The Virginia Genealogical Society and found them at: . If you go from their home page to their publications page you will find that you can buy, for $15 ea, back issues of _Magazine of Virginia Genealogy_, including #23 containing the Moore & Slatten article.
This article systematically goes thru early records containing the Rolfe name, or variants thereof, mostly in Pasquotank County (one of the small counties in northeast NC). The spelling variants I found mentioned in the article are: Relfe, Rolfe, Rofe, Rolph, Roalfe, Roelfe, Relph, Relf.
