FH> Thomas Rolfe and his wife didn't have multiple children
Actually they did ! There was also: Anthony Moses William
FH> all insisted that Thomas Rolfe and his wife had one child: Jane
This has been an oft repeated statement but not exactly accurate. A number of Jane (POYTHRESS) ROLFE's children died young ... so better to say only one known surviving child who grew to maturity.
FH> "Barnett" claim to Pocahontas descent has been around for quite some time
One source for this is the government agency that is in charge of historical markers. I would welcome any feedback as to how much research they do. I would think they they would be accurate ... but if anyone knows otherwise, please share your insights.
IN,Johnson-Co's best-known & most unusual grave has a historical marker which reads:
"Nancy Kerlin BARNETT Born May 14, 1793 - Died Dec. 1, 1831 Married to William BARNETT, Feb 20, 1808. He was born Sep 27, 1780, drowned in Ohio River Sep 24, 1854. William was the great-great-great-grandson of Pocahontas & John ROLFE. Daniel O. DOTY, 1846-1934, protected his grandmother's grave by staying here with his gun, while the county relocated this cemetery in order to build the road. A concrete slab was placed over the grave, to protect the marker, Aug 8, 1912."
She is buried near the Shelby-Co line in IN,Johnson-Co in a mound in the middle of County Road 400S (one road south of Amity off of 31, east of a creek).
