I have often wondered if Cross could be a misspelling of Rolfe/Roff/Cross.If you have tried to read that old script, often it is difficult to see the diference between the old fashioned s, t, and f,Some times an l or an f would get mixed up too, because of how some Rolfes wrote, half printing and half script.
I have seen many letters from people named Cross who made the same Pocahontas claim. Also several years ago there was an extremely interesting article in Magazine of Virgina Gen. about a Thomas Cross who was murderedon shipboard on Chesapeake Bay. - About the time of Bacon's Rebellion,He had to go to a Port on the Deleware Atlantic Coast. He choose a route on Chesapeake Bay and up one of the Maryland/Delaware Rivers, then went overland a short distance to the Post city and got the very expensive item.
He was murdered aboard his ship on the way back. This was in the 1600's.
Another Gen. Magazine came out with a reference about a Jhohn Carter and John Jones being tried for murder of a Thomas Rolfe and they were ordered to touch the body at the trial. It was hard not to jump to conclusions about these two cases being one and the same.
There seems to be 4 Thomas Rolfe's in the 1600, if you have read much about this, so to find a 5th murdered at about 1659 or 1669 compounds the problem.Too many bodies-if one wants to take a laughing view of matters---.Can anyone take the Cross line to the 1600's and untangle it?
