Mike, I don't know if it qualifies as a controversy, but my research turns up no one named Penelope as a child of John Bolling and Mary Kennon Bolling.
This is quoted from the Memoir of the Bolling Family, written by Robert Bolling of Chellowe (1738-1775), grandson of John Bolling and my wife's gggggrandfather:
"He [John Bolling] married Mary, daughter of Richard Kennon of Conjuror's Neck, by whom he had one son, John Bolling, born 20 Jan'y, 1700, and five daughters:
Jane born in 1703; married to Richard Randolph. Mary, in 1711; married to John Fleming. Elizabeth, born in 1709; married to Dr. William Gay. Martha, born in 1713; married to Mr. Thomas Eldridge. Anne, born in 1718; married to Mr. James Murray."
I wish I could give you a lead on Penelope Bolling, but whatever Bolling line she's from is one I've not personally researched. You might check postings about Penelope in the Bolling family forum for clues.Best, Fred
