I hope I did not offend you but I was trying to establish what is correct and can be verified and what has been written and is passed on in good faith but is incorrect.
Philip Barbour's book is worth reading re the provenance of the items claimed as relics of Pocahontas. He took expert opinion and items were not accepted as being created in the right time span.
The American museums were very eager to have anything that was claimed to have belonged to Pocahontas or Rolfe.
I am happy that the family who passed on the items had title to them, what I disagree with is that they ever belonged to Pocahontas.
Another example is that the only known portrait is the one by Simon de Passe. Yet other postcards are still being sold at Jamestown as the 'likeness' of Pocahontas. An Indian woman yes, Pocahontas NEVER.
The same as the one claimed to be her and her son Thomas which is of a Indian and her child.
As I have written before - the Rolfe and Elwin families have NO conection to the American Colonist.
As I showed in my last email there were two sisters
Hannah & Ann Rolfe.
One married into the Rolfe family, the other the Elwin. Yet BOTH those sisters descendants claimed to be relatives of John Rolfe through his son Thomas.
But both the sisters were legitamate children of Anthony Rolfe.
That illustrates something is badly wrong and later reseachers never checked the facts.
The Rolfe - Elwin claim, as I have stated, did not arise until longafter her death being the era of many false claims to famous families that happened in America and England.
And continues to this day.
It is also the time when the 'newly rich' were inventing illustrious ancestors and 'coats of arms'
Again - happens today
So I do not write to oppose things that you say, but to try to ensure that only verifiable facts are passed on to future researchers.
I am sure that you agree that we all seek the truth
Best wishes
Joyce
