Thank you for your reply!I appreciate the "lead" about George; I'll look for him.Wish John wasn't such a popular name for Poffenbargers!
I do not have the county name where Noel/Noal was born in Illinois. In the 1900 IL Census (Martinsville, Clark Co., ILL), I found Noal Puffinbarger & John Puffinbarger (both ages were correct)(they were living with two other families & working for them as laborers).Noel married Ethel Shawver and John married Linda Rush.In 1906, Noel & Ethel are living in Martinsville, Clark Co., IL.Found the family in the 1910 IL Census living in Clark Co., IL.In 1915, they are living in Casey, Clark Co., IL.I know this doesn't help with finding a John Poff....But, I'm working my way (backwards) to find Noel's father.Maybe, word of mouth from the family could have gotten this mixed up.Maybe, I'll find a John further back in the family.Don't know! One thing that is interesting is that I found a marriage in Marshall, Clark Co., IL, of Joshua Poffinbarger & Mary (Polly) Glatfelter on July 6, 1854.Could this be a clue?May try church records for a birth.
I had found the C.N. Poffenbarger (wife - Minnie, Doratha M. - daughter, Emmerson - son, & father - John R.) in the 1920 IL Census, too; they were living in Ogle Co., Adeline, Ill.(street - Maine)
I found in the 1930 IL Census: Chauncey N. Poffenberger, age 52, born 1877 in ILL. (Polo, Ogle Co., IL) [this birthdate is closer to your Coyle N. Poff....What about the area?] --Haven't been to the records to see who lived with him or how the "script" of his name will look.
Could Noel/Noal be a name that was passed down in other families? It would be interesting to know.
