Chris,
I see no indication that Lawrence Marion Polk was born in Spring City, Rhea Co., TN.All census for him and his siblings show birth in Florida. You must have some family info other than the records I see.Appears to me the family was in Hillsborough Co., FL., from the marriage of Marion Stafford Polk to Minnie Sylvester there on 12 April 1903, until Marion S. died there in 1948.The family was in Hillsborough Co., FL., 1920 census, 1930 census, 1935 Florida State census. The middle name Stafford likely is a maiden name of an ancestor, given that it is Marion's middle name, and the middle name of Marion/Minnie's first child, Clarence Stafford Polk. You might develop that angle.I checked my database for a Polk/Stafford marriage, but did not find one.I also did more census research this morning and I still find nothing on Marion Stafford Polk in either the 1900 census (when I assume he might still be with his parents, but ? on that) and the 1910 census, when he was married to Minnie and had at least five children.I even looked for the children, but found nothing.I suppose the family could have moved out of Florida and were living in another state in the 1910 census, but the family must have moved back before about 1912, as Minnie Lee Polk was b. in Florida c1909, and Thelma Polk (m. Busto), was b. in Florida in 1912.
Again, I think your best recourse is to get the 1948 death cert. for Marion Stafford Polk to see if his parents are given on it.You might also consider asking one of your Polk male cousins to be DNA tested.Your mother's brother would be a good candidate.Such test would likely lay to rest any question about a Polk blood connection, at least with the Polk and Pollocks that have been tested.Something is not right when you cannot find a person of a surname in two census; one possibly, but missing two tells me there may be a problem other than just bad indexing on the census. You come up with any more clues, I will help, but for now, I have nothing more.Bill
