Marge,
Forget that other census info I mentioned in prior posting, that is not the correct group. Some of this following you may already know.
I found the marriage record for "Andreas Watraly" and "Maria Kacsur" and they were married on 13 July 1903, at St. Mary's Greek Catholic Church, Scranton, PA.The marriage record gives at least the parents of the groom, maybe of the bride, but the record is difficult to interpret, as it is in Latin.Appears the couple lost their first child, Stephanus Watraly in 1905.There is a record for his death, also.
The 1910 census I could not locate.I am pretty sure they lived in Scranton, but if so, the names are so messed up I could not find them.I also found the naturalization papers, 1916, for Andrew, that you mentioned.
I did find the family in the 1920 census of Scranton, PA., indexed under Watrock. By 1920, the family consisted of Andrew, Mary, Annie, age 11; John, age 8; Mary, aged 5; Julia, age 3; Margaret, age 1.Son Nikolas, who was mentioned in the naturalization papers as b. 25 June 1911, apparently died between his birth and the 1920 census. He is mentioned in Mary (Watral) Polk's obit as having predeceased her. What I find interesting, and intriguing in view of your own grandmother's name of Julia, is that Mary's obit does not mention her sister Julia at all.
Based on Scranton city directories, Andrew died in 1929 or early 1930, as the 1929 Scranton directory is the last one where he is shown as living, with Mary as his wife.I found no record of his death or burial. The 1930 Scranton directory is the first one where Mary appears as his widow.I could not find the family in the 1930 census of Lackawanna Co., PA.Again, the names must really be messed up.
In the 1940 census, Mary is living in Scranton with her son John and Mary, both single. So, Mary married John Polk after 1 April 1940.The two other children I have not mentioned are Eleanor and Helen who are shown in the obit of Mary (Watral) Polk as having predeceased her. These two must have been born after 1 Jan 1920, married and in their own households by the 1940 census.
Mary (Kachur) Watral was alive in Scranton as late as 1960.I find no record after that, and have found no info re her death date, place, or burial.
As far as John Polk, there are several references to John Polk in Scranton, but I cannot put any of them with Mary Watral, so I have really made no headway on identifying him. Without some info for him (DOB, POB, whatever) I cannot identify him, but I am going to look some more.
If any of this triggers memory and more info, please post same, might be helpful.Later, Bill
