I am not sure when the NC / VA border was firmly established into it's current line. I live in Johnston County, NC, this is a good 100+ miles from the coast. But Pasquotank County, NC, is very close to Elizabeth City County, VA. At the start this might have all been Virginia as I believe the original charter was to "The Virginia Company".
According to this write-up on Robert The Interpreter Poole (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaschsm/Poole.html), his son William John Poole was married to an Indian native, and going backwards to his son and grandson and great grandson, I believe this to be the same "John Poole" in my list, and your list (main difference being date of birth, 1622 vs 1630), who was married to Jane Avera, who as I told you last night appears to not have been born an Avera, but appears to have married into the Avera family after John Poole died.
Now the possibility is either that "Jane" was the Indian princess, or that John Poole was married to an Indian native prior to being married to Jane, in which case the likelihood is that some offspring are John & Unknown and other offspring are John & Jane.
