Poole/Bates/Dodson/Hammonds
The farthest I have traced my line back so far is to my gggg-grandfather David Bates who died in Autauga County Alabama in the 1820's. According to his grandson, James Madison Bates, in the 1911 Arkansas Confederate Census, David was a volunteer soldier in the War of 1812 in Georgia, but I have not been able to track him that far back so far. I have a document dates 30 March 1847 about
the estate settlement for David Bates. His heirs are listed as Catherine Shropshire, Thomas J. Bates, and Elizabeth (Bates)York. It also mentions the heirs of Cloe Ann late wife of John Poole as Elizabeth Davis and Walter Poole as well as the heirs of Madison Bates, Elizabeth, James M. and Crawford. It was also mentioned in this document that John Pool be appointed guardians of David,
Elizabeth, and Walter Pool and the heirs of Madison Bates, Elizabeth, James M. and Crawford. It is frustrating with some of the folks out there that assume certain things and therefore throw the research off in the wrong direction. That being said I will tell you what I have
in actual documents. In other words, documented facts.
In the 1911 Census of Confederate Veterans, James Madison Bates states that his mother was Lavinia Johnson, daughter of Betsy Hammonds and Reuben Johnston. This makes sense, since I have records showing that his dad, James Madison Bates was married to Lavinia Johnson and my ggg-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Bates was married to Barbara or Barbey Ann Johnson. Their sister, Catherine Bates married Greene Shropshire and moved to Texas. He states that his grandfather Bates (David), was truly an Englishman and his grandmother was a German lady.
My family is associated in Alabama with the Wyatts, Powells, Aldridges, Pooles,
and others.
I have a document dated 13 October 1853 where John H. Pool has been appointed guardian of the estate of William C. Bates. He was the minor brother to the above mentioned James Madison Bates interviewed in the 1911 census and son of the senior James Madison Bates.
I have another document dated 03 May 1854 showing where John H. Poole was a justice of the peace was witnessing a land transaction between the sheriff and my gggg-grandfather's (David Bates) widow Susan Hughs. We have not been able to verify here maiden name. She married A. B. Hughs after David died.
Another side note. There is also a Warner Hurst mentioned several times throughout these documents. Warner Hurst and John H. Poole are mentioned in a document dated 27th December 1850 as witnesses stating that Warner Hurst has
been appointed guardians of William Crawford Bates and Elizabeth Bates, minor heirs of the deceased James Madison Bates.
John H. Poole was married at one time to Chloreann Bates, she was the daughter of my gggg-grandfather David. After she died, John Hanson Poole married Nancy B. Dodson. Interestingly enough, several people have posted information on the Bates family that moved from Virginia to Georgia. They all include the names David, Chloe Ann, Drusilla, Nancy Bates Dodson and others. I have a document
showing where Susan Hughs and her husband have given permission for Warner Hurst to marry Drusilla E Bates.
I am sure there are other similarities I am missing since this is all confusing but hopefully it helps.
