Children of Elijah Pope and Mary Davis according to the record Elijah left which is housed at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis:
Elijah Pope (4 Jan 1763) Mary wife of Elijah (22 Jul 1759)
1. Charity Pope (25 Oct 1784) 2. Olive Surginer Pope (2 Oct 1786) 3. Jacob Pope (19 Mar 1788 - 22 Dec 1814) 4. Pilgrim (II) Pope (24 Jun 1790) 5. Sarah "Sally" Pope (7 Feb 1792) 6. Pharabe Pope (10 Feb 1794 - 20 Feb 1794) 7. Margaret "Peggy" Pope (12 May 1795) 8. Pharabe Pope (21 Feb 1797) 9. Elijah (Jr.) Pope (13 Nov 1798) 10. Nathan Pope (5 Mar 1801)
Son Pilgrim remained in Crawford Co., IN; son Elijah went to Illinois. No record of Nathan.
Elijah's parents are proved Pilgrim Pope and Olive Surgener; they had two sons: Elijah and Nathaniel/Nathan. Pilgrim's parents are proved Jacob Pope and Jane ??. As to Jacob's parents, I suspect they are Jacob and Mourning Pope but there has been some debate on that subject - mostly by a non-descendant based on faulty Southern lineage society applications.
I am interested in any additional documentation proving Jacob and Mourning besides Jacob's will. Also interested in documentation of Elijah's son Pilgrim's wife Sarah's surname of Tower as posted in one of the replies herein. My line is through eldest daughter Charity (Pope) Creech.
Elijah began selling out in VA and NC in 1813 and was probably in Indiana by late 1815 at least, by way of Tennessee. Son Pilgrim purchased property in IN late in 1815 and Creech son-in-law did same January 1816. Elijah's first known land purchase in IN was 1818. He was a jurist for over 20 years in VA and his position was often referred to as Elijah Pope, Esq., in court records.
