I've been looking at this Thomas Pope family because in his Rev. War pension records there's an affidavit of John Pope and David Pope saying they know Thomas, and are familiar with his service, etc.
I'm trying to find more information on my John Pope of Laurens Co., SC who names his three sons Thomas Thornton Pope, David Young Pope, and Henry Creek Pope. I am a direct descendant of Henry Creek Pope.
At the S.C. Archives in Columbia, I found a self-published family history written by Mark H. Johnson. He is a descendant of Thomas Pope of Spartanburg Co., SC through his son Vincent B. Pope, who eventually settled in Newberry Co., SC.
Mark has found information on Thomas that you probably already have - his Rev. War records for VA and NC, the WPA and clerk's copies of his will, etc., and has put together a short, but interesting story on Thomas Pope and his family.
I saw your posting here at GenForum, and wanted to share what I found in this book regarding Thomas's wife Charlotte. Like I said, you may already know all of this.
Mr. Johnson says in one paragraph that "Vincent was the son of Thomas Pope and Charlotte (her last name was probably Dewberry." On pg. 7 he says "Thomas Pope married 'Charlotte' (last name probably Dewberry. Charlotte was probably the daughter of Giles Dewberry of Spartanburg)in a ceremony conducted by Rev. John Blackwell, a minister from just north of Spartanburg. The name Dewberry is sometimes spelled Deberry or Debery in legal documents since individuals would often write a name the way it sounded."
On pg. 27 Mr. Johnson has placed exact photocopies of portions of a page that obviously come from a published text, which he doesn't bother to reference (unless I missed it). My guess is that it'll be a publication which includes deed abstractions for Spartanburg Co., SC.
This won't help much, but will at least make the "confusion" about the spelling of Charlotte Pope's maiden name "legally confusing" - meaning we at least have some documentation for the "confusion."
"p. 336-337 Jun. 30, 1815Thomas Pope (Spartanburgh) to Charlotte Debery (same); for $1 sold 16 cattle, 4 horses (?), 10 hogs, 4 feather beds, and all household and kitchen furniture......."(my note - the "same" in parentheses means she has the same last name as Thomas Pope.)
"p. 337-338 Jun. 30, 1815Thomas Pope (Spartanburgy) to Charlotte Debery (same); for $100 sold (acreage not known) on both sides Buck Cr........"
I don't know how "thorough" Mark Johnson's research was, but it looked good to me, and for the most part was backed up by documentation. I'm guessing that if there was further info "out there" showing Charlotte's last name, that he probably would have found it and placed it in his book. But I say that knowing there's always a possibility that something new and different is "out there."
Mr. Johnson seems to think Thomas was from Southampton Co., VA, so I'll look there soon and see if there're any further clues about John Pope and David Pope.
