There is an obscure member of my family whose name was Poppa or Pappa. According to the family legend, my grandmother,Nora Ahearn, as a young girl in New York City, around 1899 or 1900 met a Frank Poppa. His father owned a saloon. Against the objections of his parents, who were Jewish, they married anyway. Shortly thereafter, after a child wasborn, Frank died of typhoid, leaving my grandmother with a small child. that child grew up to be my half uncle, "Frankie." He was in the Navy in the 20's, and died in around 1930 or so. He never married. He is my mystery person. No one alive in my family can help me out with this. I'm not even totally sure of the last name. Although my mom says his birth name was Poppa, I also have some census evidence that he took my grandmother's new married name, Reilly. I would really like to learn about this colorful member of my family.
