I originally found my Postons on a pedigree file on the LDS family history siteand then started trying to "prove" it.I am descended from the distaff side.
We still live in the British Isles.
I have "proved" the family back as far as Winifreda Poston christened 10th April 1712 daughter of William Poston and Winifred.Winifred married a James Pooten at Kimbolton, Herefordshire 18th April 1733.The parish records states that they were both from Middleton on the Hill.
As that tied in the pedigree file I copied everything into my family tree program with a '?' to the side to show I hadn't checked the records.
I live about 4-5 hours drive from the Herefordshire records office, so I didn't look at these notes again until I was ready to visit and when I did I realised that the dates did NOT tie in.
The reason being that they had William christened 1686 son of William and Martha and married to another Winifred as being the father of Winifred who married James Pooton (hope that makes sense). That can only be the case if William was an adult christening as there is only 8 years between his christening and the christening of William and Winifred's first child Hanna christened 1694.I have seen the parish register and it just says William son of William and Martha nothing about adult.
William and Winfred who had 8 children at Middleton on the Hill are definitely my Ancestors. What I am doubtful about is whether the William son of William and Martha is correct.
So I have been looking for a William born perhaps about 10-15 years earlier than the one born 1686 and found one born Leysters (just a couple of miles from Middleton on the Hill) 17th June 1676. Father Roger mother Ann.
A better bet would be William born 21st September 1668 at Knighton upon Teme father William Mother Joyce. The age is a little better as he would be 21.
Another possibility would be the William born at Lindridge 30th October 1664. Lindridge is not that far away although it is in Worcestershire rather than Herefordshire or Shropshire. He would be 25 then with a father John and Alice.
Even after what I have written above, I do think that William Poston who married Winifred must have been related to the other William in some way, perhaps a nephew or cousin, as he named one of his children Martha and one of the others Johannes.
