The Holy Bible Containing The Old and New Testaments: Translated Out of the Original Tongues; And With the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Edinburgh: Printed by Mark and Charles Kerr, His Majesty's Printers: MDCCXCV (1795).
Large, over-sized, leather bound family bible (10x8x2.5 in). This is an amazing find; a true piece of early American History from BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, and...has MANY geneological tie-ins to our first days as a country (more explained with geneological research below). As for the Bible, it is in solid condition, with all boards and spine present, although the front and back boards have separated neatly from the text block and spine cover. There is some minor wear and chipping on the spine and scuffing on front and back boards, but, as seen in pics, nothing major at all. Large and heavy, and in old english font that is charming to look at. This Bible is filled with history; not just with the printing origin and age, but mostly from the family line it was inherited through.
Family genealogy is the Potter family out of Cranston, RI, a very prominent and influential family of the time. The front Ep is detached and quite tattered, but still contains a clear, hand written notestating, "Abigail Potter of Cranston in the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation, her book, bought in the year of our Lord, 1801," then, a bit fatrther down, states "Eliza Potter that is my name". On the page opposite of the New Testament there is the full family history, which states as follows:
Zuriel Potter was born April 2, 1740
Abigail Potter, his wife, was born December 27, 1740
Our children's birth are as underwritten:
Our 1st Freelove Potter was born Friday, October 22, 1762
Our 2nd Rebecca Potter was born Friday, December 23, 1764
Our 3rd Anna Potter was born Tuesday, February 24, 1767
Our 4th Jemima Williams Potter was born Monday, April 24, 1769
Our 5th Abigail Potter was born Tuesday, December 31, 1770
Our 6th Benjamin Potter was born Thursday, August 11, 1774
Our 7th Zuriel Potter was born Sunday March 15, 1777
Our 8th Elizabeth Potter was born Monday, August 16, 1779
Our 9th Asa Potter was born Sunday March 24, 1782
Zuriel Potter died Friday, November 18, 1796 - aged 56 years, 7 months
Most interesting is the research I have found, stating as far back as the late 1500s in England, with George Potter working as a servant for the King ( I believe), into the father of the owner of the Bible (Abigail Potter, whose maiden name was King, and whose father (Clement King) was a prominent figure in the RI militia during the Revolutionary War. The Potter line went on into the 1800s to make James A. Potter & Co lumber company, which held success for decades and was also a very strong industry in the area.
There was also mention of a Colonel Potter involved in a skirmish on 10-7-1775 in Bristol, RI, but I am not sure if this is a direct tie. Another vague tie in is Israel Potter, a figure that Herman Melville later made famous in his writing. He did reside in the same area and did carry the Potter name, although I cannot be sure how tied-in he possibly could be. Alas, still an amazing history between these covers!!
