I'm afraid I don't have nearly as much as I'd like. Here is what I have written about two heads of household (also included their children as I found them in the 1850 census) that I found.Of course, Eliza Ann is not included, since I wouldn't have known about her without her Poulter name.
John Poulter, b. 1787, Culpeper Co., Va., d. 1857, married in Jefferson Co., Ky. by B. Allen on 11 December 1817 to Polly Arterburn, b. about 1800, Jefferson Co., Ky., daughter of John Arterburn. They were in Edgar Co., Ill. in the 1850 census with four children listed. Also in Edgar Co. was the family of William Arterburn, b. ca. 1812 and of James A. Arterburn, b. ca. 1819.The Poulters appear to have arrived in Illinois in the 1830s.[Note by Robert P. Moore:I found this family quite by accident in the Edgar Co. census. The census taker there did more than was required by the Census Bureau and indicated the county of birth of each individual. This, of course, helped to identify these people.I have changed the approximate year of birth of John Poulter because of the information in the 1850 census.] [This is not the one in Edgar Co., but note the mention of him within this paragraph.] The Family of Jane Poulter and James Arterburn and Harvey Gregory Jane Poulter, born about 1792 in Culpeper Co., Va., married in Jefferson Co., Ky. by B. Allen on 23 January 1817 to James Arterburn, son of John Arterburn. There is a later transaction of transfer of property in Middletown, Jefferson Co., by James H. Arterburn and wife Sarah J., who are presumed to be the same people. On 18 Oct. 1825, Jefferson Co., Ky., Jane Arterburn, widow of James, m. Harvey Gregory. The bondsman was Davis Poulter.Nothing else is known about this family.[Robert Moore:There is a James Arterburn in Edgar Co., Ill., but he is too young to be the one who married Sarah Jane Poulter.] 1. Mildred Ann Gregory, residing with her grandmother Mrs. Ann Poulter, m. 17 Apr. 1844, Jefferson Co., Ky., Samuel Matlack.
I have no knowledge of the migration other than the 1830s comment.Don't recall what I based that on.Would be glad to know what you can tell me.I have not been able to get any responses from Illinois Poulters to whom I have written.
