I have (had) a grandfather named Arthur Poulton who is a bit of a mystery even to his children (he was very tight-lipped about his past). He was born Jan. 27, 1891, probably in Lancaster, Eng; his mother, Edith Emily Ball, was a domestic servant in Nottingham. His father is unknown, but legend has it he died young after being hit in the street by a horse and carriage....not known if it was before or after Arthur's birth, so he may have been illegitimate.Edith eventually married Arthur Poulton, a shoemaker in Lancaster. Young Arthur may have been adopted by the elder Arthur (Edith's husband), but in any event young Arthur adopted his step-dad's surname (Poulton). The younger Arthur married Ivy Winnifred Woods on Oct. 5, 1916 in St. Michael's in Folkestone, and immigrated to Canada in 1918. If anyone has ANY info on my mysterious grandfather, I would LOVE to hear it! Many thanks!
