I am researching a William Burton, who applied for a land patent in Duplin Co, NC in 1752. During my research, I found the following items.
6/9/1744: William Burton, of Craven Co, NC, gave power of attorney to "trusty and loving friends" John Powell and Arthur Johnston to collect debts owed to him. Witnesses: Thomas Smith, Mallachi Johnston. Recorded in Craven Co, NC Deed Book 2, page 419. Also recorded in Craven Co, NC Court Minutes of June 1744. IS THIS THE JOHN POWELL WHO DIED BEFORE 1750 OR THE ONE WHO MIGRATED TO BLADEN CO, NC?
On 11/20/1744, William Burton was admitted to the North Carolina Council held at Newbern to prove his rights in Craven Co, NC. His household consisted of 3 whites and 2 blacks. On 11/22/1744, William Burton petitioned the council for a warrant for 200 acres in Edgecombe Co, NC. Recorded in Council Minutes.
1744: William Burton appears on the Tax List in Craven Co, NC. Recorded in book "North Carolina Taxpayers".
1746: Johnston Co, was created from Craven Co.
1750: Duplin Co was created from New Hanover Co. In 1750, Duplin Co bounded Johnston Co on the south.
Apr 1752: William Burton petitioned the NC Executive Council for a land grant of 100 acres in Duplin Co, NC.
9/26/1753: William Burton received a land patent for 400 acres in Duplin Co, NC on the west side of the NE branch of Cape Fear, joining the north side of Persimmon Branch, Condrick Whitman and Bonneys Branch. Recorded in NC Patent Book 2, page 73. THIS IS MY ANCESTOR. IS HE THE WILLIAM BURTON FROM CRAVEN CO, NC?
