I'm really curious about your Powless family. Although it appears you are referring to the Six Nations Tribe, I cant help but wonder if there may be a connection to the First Nations Tribe.
You mentioned family members being born in the Toronto area. My Grandmother, (Mayford or Mayfred Powless, born 1913) and her siblings were also born in the Toronto area, circa 1911 - 1916.
Her parents were David John Powless (b. 1869), of First Nations Mohawk Territory, Tyendinagaand Rose Hannah (nee Hawkins) Mepahm - Powless,(b. 1886).
David John Powless' parents were:
Father: Jacob Powles (born abt.1836)
Jacob's parents were, Nicholas Powles, (b.1801) and Susan (nee ?) Powles, (b. 1791)
Mother: Nancy (Zachariah) Powles born Jan. 7 1841.
Nancy's parents were Michael Zariah (b.1821),(aka: Michael Fisher) and Magdelein (nee,?) Zariah, (b. 1820).
Jacob and Nancy were married in 1858.
I have been told that both Zachariah's and Powles's (later spelled "Powless") traveled back and forth between First Nations and Sixth Nations territories.
Do you recognize any of these names?
