Does anyone recognize this Elizabeth and John Pownall? It was in article "The violence that alarmed Pennsylvania in the 1970's"
The battery of Elizabeth Pownal was more violent in its effect. In October 1763, Pownal informed John Ingram, John Edwards and William Leppard (or Leopard) that they owed her one crown for drinks they consumed at her inn, Edwards shouted, "you are a Damned lying xxxxx."Mrs. Pownall slapped him, saying, "don't call me a lyar," at which point Edwards scooped up "a Piece of Board about Seven feet long & with both his Hands Struck her . . . with the edge of it on the Side of her Head whereupon she fell down as dead."Edwards then "Danc'd about the House Singing & saying the Damn'd xxxx is I hope as Dead as a Devil."John Pownall later testified that his wife "Bled mutch & was Unsensible for some Hours, & is yet very Ill." Truly violent assaults like this were prosecuted as “assault with intent to kill.”
