Hi Ivy I am D.W.P's grand daughter. I have some information about my grandfather, though he is a person that my parents are reluctant to speak kindly about, if at all. I have only a hazy recollection of him as a 'snuff sniffing' old man who had a fabulous talent for playing the piano. He was, unfortunately, an alcoholic. He was a member of the Masons, I am led to believe and, it seems ultimately, he wound up in large debt and sold the house in Datchett lock stock and barrell from under my grandmother's nose (Mabel Violet Wagstaff). Apparently she had kept the place going (during the war and subsequent his long absences..dunno where!).... by taking in lodgers and there were scenes of desperation over money which seemed to be of a recurrent absence in his life...bad debts I think.
From stories my gran told me, as a child, they met and married in Fulham where I believe they both lived. He bought the house and land in Marlow Bottom, Buckingamshire ( no idea what happened to that). He was, indeed an electrician but I believe that, as a couple, they were involved with Victorian Parlour pass times ( Got loads of his original piano sheet music) such as seances! With that and the Masonic collection I think he must have been a 'colourful' character! His parents lived with them....I would like to know more about them. His father went blind ( not sure whether this was congenital or as a result of WW1).
Sadly my mum is reluctant to give me any more info, on account of traumatic childhood/family shame..and my dad wanting to erase this branch of a family...understandable I guess.
I do not know if he had siblings...I could try and find out.
I think mum has some birth/wedding certificates in her possession....
I am intrigued by your search. What is your connection?
I would like to know his mother's maiden name. Do you know?
