Hello Bridget Re your enquiry PRINTZ. Ther was a large family of PRINTZ in Hamburg but when I started my search in the 1980s there were only 3 in the Hamburg phone book.I wrote to all three and received a reply from the daughter of one with who I started corresponding. She went to the State Archives in Hamburg and got copies of the records of the St Nikolai Church which had my PRINTZ family going back to the 1600s through to births in 1785. George Heinrich PRINTZ b10.8.1746 = Sara Magdalena SCHMIDT on the 8.4.1876 1.Herman Lucas b15.12.1776 He was a German mercenary soldier in England and was sentanced to the Colonies (Sydney) for 14 years. Whilst in England he married Maria HITCHINS and may have had three children before starting his sentance Nothing further is known of this family. Herman was quite a common name in the PRINTZ family and I believe that your husband may well be a descendant of one of my family of PRINTZ but I can't help further unless you can go back another generation or two. Another conclusion I have come to is that I believe that quite a number of the Hamburg PRINTZ families did migrate to the USA,but when I haven't really tried to find out as any research along these lines would be lateral to my research. There are many avenues you can research including shipping lists, church of the LDS etc Good hunting and keep in touch.
