Contrary to Pope and Andrews books, I'm convinced that Esther Smith, Burpee Prouty's mother, was the second wife of Richard (b. 1708/9) rather than the first wife of Richard (b. 1742). The best proof so far are 4 deeds from Worcester Co., MA., if read together. #1,Book 38, page 204 has Joseph House, Lydia House Prouty's father, selling 30 acres to Richard in 1748.Deed recorded in 1757 after Joseph died. #2 Book 37, page 455, has Joseph's widow Lydia House, her children and in-laws (incl. Lydia and Richard), selling their share of the House family property to Joshua House in 1757. #3 Book 63, page 108, May 7, 1770, Richard Prouty of LANCASTER and Esther Prouty sell to Jotham Bush the 30 acres he got from Lydia's father in 1748. #4 Book 63, page 110, June 6, 1770, Richard Prouty of BRATTLEBORO & brothers Joshua & Francis of Lancaster plus Silas Fairbank sell 2 different parcels to Jotham Bush. So we know that Esther was alive in 1770 when Richard (b. 1742)had or was about to marry Susannah White, his first cousin thru the House line. And he didn't recognize Burpee as his son when he made his will. Further, Richard (b. 1742) was in the military on the Western Front in 1761&1762.Didn't make sense that he would marry in 1762 at age 20 when away so long. The clue was the name Burpee.Couldn't find Esther Smith but did find Esther Burpee who m. Jacob Smith 1745, had 3 kids incl daughter Esther Smith born 1757. Sgt Jacob Smith died on the Western Front in 1758 - Esther was administratrix of his estate - w/ kids ages 6, 4, &1 then. Widower Richard (b. 1708/09) still had Elisha, age 7, at home when Lydia died in 1760.The only later use I have seen of the Burpee name is in the line of that Elisha. Makes sense if Esther Burpee Prouty was his step-mother from age his age 9 on. His step-sisters were 10, 8 and 5 when Esther married. It wouldn't be possible for Richard (b. 1708/09) and Esther to have a child born 16 years after Burpee. I agree with Louise that Isaac (b. abt 1779 per Pope) probably is the same person as brother Francis's Isaac (b. 1771 per Pope). Have much more than included in this short message.Haven't found death records for Richard (b. 1708/09) or for Esther yet. Would like to hear from the Burpee side with their data and for a critical review of what I've found.
