Here is some information I have on this Prouty line. The obiturary of Chester Prouty of Usborne Canada states as follows:
Thurs. Jan 7, 1915
DEATH OF CHESTER PROUTY
There passed away on December 31 (1914?) at the home of his son, Samuel C. Prouty, Lot 21, Con. 3, Usborne, after a-- illness of several years, from old age, one of the old settlers, in the person of Chester Prouty, aged 89 years, seven months, and 27 days. The family of the late Mr. Prouty came to Canada from the state of Vermont and can trace their ancestry back for three hundred years having a printed record of it. He was the youngest of a family of five boys and one girl, he being the only one born in Canada—at Cornwall. His father Hiram Prouty, was a carpenter and helped to build some of the public buildings in Ottawa. While attending school in Cornwall the late Mr. Prouty was a schoolmate of John Sandfield MacDondald. At 17 years of age he commenced to teach school, starting on his birthday in Osnabrook after which he took a course in Franlkin Academy, N.Y., and then taught in Papineau Secenery and L’Orignal until 1854 when he moved to Western Ontario, teaching at Gundy Corners near Clandeboye, then called Flanagan’s Corners, and 16 years at Fairfield—until 1871, when he gave up teaching having taught 28 years in all. He was a clerk of Stephen Township for 41 years, giving up in 1899, owing to failing eyesight. In 1849 he married Jamima Anderson, daughter of the late Francis Anderson, who Predeceased him 32 years. He is survived by one son Samuel C., six grand children and five great grandchildren. Deceased was highly respected throughout his long life. The funeral took place to Exeter cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
This obituary give a considerable amount of information regarding the descendents of one Hiram Prouty. Hiram's wife was named Altha. This information came from the following baptismal record:
"Hiram Prouty of the Parish of Cornwall, Carpenter and Altha his wife, were baptized August the 1st 1823. By me S.J. Mountaine Minister." ----------- Cornwall, Trinity Church, Anglican, register of baptisms. 1803-1846, Index at the end of the volume. (M.G. 9, D7-3, Volume I), p.210. Reel C-3028.
The 1829 census for the Town of Cornwall has the following information:
1829 Census for the Town of Cornwall, Ontario: Hiram Prouty (sic), 3 males under 16; 1 female under 16; 2 males over 16; and 1 female over 16. -------
Population Lists of the Town of Cornwall and Roxborough Townships, 1829, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Historical Society.
This appears to account for all of Hiram's children alluded to in Chester's obituary except for one son.
To my knowledge, there is no proof that this Hiram is the son of Elijah and Esther Kellogg. If someone has that proof I would love to see it.
A piece of information I found about Fayette Prouty is as follows:
City of Wayne, Michigan
Wayne's First Manufacturing Company
The Prouty and Glass Carriage Company, built on Sophia Street in 1888, was the first manufacturing company in the city. The company had been organized in 1881 by Fayette Prouty and John S. Glass and manufactured, carriages and sleighs. They moved to Wayne in 1888 and by 1889 had employed about 50 men. The company underwent a reincorporation after a recession. George H. Stellwagen, became president; James R. Hosie; his business partner was treasurer; and William C. Prouty (the son of Fayette Prouty), was secretary and general manager. Augutus Stellewagen, replaced his brother as president, and was replaced himself by another brother, Jacob in until 1915. The company was in operation until 1915, when it was replaced by Harroun Motors, which produced automobiles from 1916 to 1920, when the factory was closed.
This Clearly Identifies William C as the son of Fayette. The following birth records also identify William C as the Son of Fayette and Catherine:
Vital records for the town of Cornwall Volume 1 page 729, Birth : Prouty, William Chester, Father Fayette, Mother Catherine, Residence Cornwall, Birthplace Cornwall, Birthdate 1846-11-02, Bapt-date 1847-01-26, Bapt-place Cornwall, Minister McCollom, Rev. J.W.
Volume 1 page 760, Birth: Prouty, Louisa Althea, Father Fayette, Mother Catherine, Residence Osnabruck, Birthplace Osnabruck, Birthdate 1849-02-25, Bapt-date 1849-12-30, Minister Williams, Rev.W.H.
The 1870 census lists two additional children of Fayette, Emmilia and Eugenia.
Hope this helps to piece together some of this family. I have more if you want to email me.
