I am trying to find a Sarah Proverbs who married a black man named Benjamin Dalling (or Darling) sometime in the late 1700s. Dalling bought an island in Maine (U.S.) in 1794. The family history says he was a slave freed by his sea captain master for saving his life in a wreck. Oral history says Sarah was white, but the earliest US Census listings for Benjamin show only blacks living in his household. I believe Benjamin was connected with a Capt. Thomas Dalling who operated pirvateers in the West Indies around the time of the American Revolution. I thought maybe Sarah might have been picked up during one of these cruises.
If anyone has anything that might be of help, I would greatly appreciate a line.
