Mary's death certificate or obituary would be the best route but with a name like Townsend it may be hard to find the right one in any list unless you know more about where and when she died. Do you know where she is buried?
Another source would be to find her ca 1903 marriage record. The problem is knowing where she got the license. I would start with Chemung.
The 1900 census does list a Mary Pryne, born Feb 1886 as the daughter of Albert and Cora of Chemung. Albert or Cora's obits may list her as a surviving child and most likely who she was married to.
