Alan,
Just found another source pertaining to Matthew vs. Madison which suggests the correct first name is Madison.
On familysearch.org, there's a death certificate for a Mrs. G.B. Miller (17 Jul 1854 - 18 Nov 1936) wherein her parents are listed as Dr. Madison Puckett and Mary Pugh.
The Tennessee Marriages database on ancestry.com lists a Dallie J. Puckett marrying G. B. Miller on 20 Dec 1877 in Hickman Co., TN.
The 1860 census for District 3, Hickman Co., TN lists a Sarah J. Puckett born about 1853, as a daughter of M. H. Puckett and Mary M. Puckett.Since Sallie is oftimes a nickname for Sarah, it could be that the marriage listing, noting Dallie, is incorrect, and should / could be Sallie.
Sarah J. Puckett is also listed in the 1870 census with M. H. Puckett (father) and M. M. (Mary Melissa?) Puckett (mother)and most of the same set of siblings as in 1860.
Sarah is in the 1880 census for District 3, Hickman Co., TN with her husband, G. B. Miller. Also on the same census page is one of her married siblings:R. T. Puckett with Isabella (R.T. Puckett married Belle Hoover in Hickman Co., on 17 Feb 1878) and living with Isabella's parents Phillip and Sarah Hoover.
This R. T. Puckett is Robert Trimble Puckett. His death certificate is also on familysearch.org.It lists his parents as Matt Puckett, born in Maury Co., TN, and Mary M. Pugh, born in Hickman, Co.
Given this, it could be that Matt was a nickname for Madison.
There are a number of family trees on ancestry.com listing Madison and Mary Puckett and descendents.Perhaps some of those posting / owning a tree might be a descendent or worth contacting.
Hope this helps a bit.
