Hi Pat, Thanks for responding. I believe that my ggrands were enslaved in SC as 5 of 6 children are listed as born there. ALSO, believe that the WEELDON surname came from the WHEELDON/WHILDEN family of Christ Church and Sumter, SC. Find who I think are 2 great aunts listed w/the WHILDEN spelling of the surname. Suspect that an ELVRIA? WHILDEN, whose 1890 death certificate is listed for Charleston, may have been kin; she is listed as an octoroon, which indicates to me that some ancestors may have chosen to pass for white. Have struggled w/this research for 13yrs and am still batting ZERO---------FAIL also, to find the NATIVE CONNECTION. Warm regards, carol.
