Olive Pullis was married first to Elisha C. Kirby on May 7, 1881 in Jackson county, Illinois. Her husband Elisha Kirby apparently murdered her brotherIsaac Pullis. .. see newspaper article following:
Source: Decatur Daily RepublicanDecatur, Illionis Cold Blooded Murder - Carbondale, Illinois, April 25, 1883 A cold blooded murder was perpetrated at this place at 6:00 last evening. The name of the murderer is Elisha Kirby and the name of the victim Isaac Pullis. Kirby has been a resident of Carbondale since about the first of the present year. He had previously lived in Cairo, Anna and Murpheysboro. He is a rough character generally. The murdered man is a brother of his wife’s. Some weeks ago Kirby and his wife had quarreled and she left him on account of his brutality and went to live with her mother at or near Murpheysboro. Pullis supported the family by driving a team and like character of work. Yesterday he was here, in the employ of James Turner. of Murphysboro, engaged in hauling old iron from the country and various parts of town. Kirby came across him last evening and went to his house and got his pistol, remarking to the housekeeper that Pullis was here and that he would kill him before he left town. After arming himself he came across Pullis in front of Elliott’s butcher shop, on the west side of the square. Some words passed between them, when Pullis remarked that he wanted nothing to do with him, and stepped into the shop. Kirby then made some remark to Pullis and as the latter turned his face, Kirby shot him through the head. He fell and the brains oozed from the wound. He lived an hour and thirty minutes, but was unconcious. After firing the shot Kirby attempted to make his escape but was arrested by Dr. Geo. M. O’Hara and turned over to the City Marsahll, who placed him in jail. There is great excitement among all classes of people. Lynching is freely talked of. Without doubt this is the most diabolical murder committed in this place since the killing of Slaney some years ago.
Ollie Pullis married Eli Overman on Sep 30, 1891 in Jackson County, Illinois. This could possibly be the second marriage of Olive Pullis... Haven't checked divorce records to see if she divorced Elisha Kirby.
If it is the same Olive Pullis, I can tell you her grandparents were Abraham and Elisabeth Pulis who lived in Wayne Co. Pennsylvania. Please email if interested in more info.
