I am a historian of the 26th Alabama and am desperately looking for descendants of Sgt. William Wilson Purnell of Company H, 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He was captured a few days after the Battle of Franklin (November, 1864) because he stayed behind with the wounded as he was a hospital steward. He resided in Crews Depot, Lamar County, Alabama after the war where he applied for pension.I don't know what happened to him after that.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, HE STATES IN A LETTER TO THE ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AROUND 1910 THAT HE HAS A HOSPITAL JOURNAL FROM WHEN THE REGIMENT TRAINED IN TUSCUMBIA, ALABAMA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WAR.THIS JOURNAL WOULD BE CRUCIAL TO MY RESEARCH!!!
