Aubrey: Although I haven't as yet associated my Purser ancestors with those of Petworth, I have been able to trace them to Steyning, Sussex. I wonder if in your research you may have encountered my line and could hold information that could assist me? A Thomas Purser, origins unknown, was apprenticed for six years as a barber to Joseph French in Steyning in 1720. In 1728 he married Elizabeth Chatfield, and the following year they moved to Cuckfield, Sussex, where they had nine children, three of whom eventually moved to Edenbridge, Kent. A son Richard settled there and established a family which remained in Edenbridge for about 100 years. I would be grateful if you, or anyone else, could assist me in determining Thomas' s origins. Unfortunately, the apprenticeship records do not contain the name and location of his father or whoever paid the apprenticeship duty at Chichester.
