Hi Larry, I was just searching this forum to find out if anyone had any information on Michael Purtell and found your message.
I had researched the Purtell (O'Purtle, Purtle) family for several years, but haven't been doing much genealogy in the past 5 years because of work, family and too many other things.
The information I have on Michael is that was born around 1815 in Ireland and probably also married there. At one time, I thought that he was married to Anna O'Shaunessy, but finally determined that it probably was an error. I do believe his wife's name was Ann though, because it is listed in the 1860 Census which states that Michael is 47 and Ann was 50. The 1880 census indicates that son Stephen (31 yrs) is living with his father Michael (65 yrs) and he is listed as being widowed. Anyway, here's what I have:
Birth: Apprx 1815
Emmigrated to US: Sometime around 1839
1. S - James Purtell, b. apprx 1838 (Ireland?); m:? ; d. ?
2. S - Michael Purtell, b. apprx 1841 (New York); m: Catherine ?; d. ?
6. S - Stephen Purtell, b. 6May1852 (Apolacon twp., Susq. Cty., PA.); m: Mary Ann Welch (Welsh, Walsh) marriage date unknown; d. 2Jan1939 (Apolacon twp., Susq. Cty., PA.)
7. D - Ann Purtell, b. apprx 1855 (Apolacon twp., Susq. Cty., PA.); m:?; d. ?
The information was gleened from Susquehanna County Census records of 1850,1860,1880,1900,1910,1920,the "Atlas of Susquehanna Co., Pa" by FW Beers 1872, Death Certificate of Stephen Purtell, and church records from St. Francis Xavier Church, Friendsville, Pa.
I spent quite a bit of time at the St. Francis Xavier cemetery because the church records indicate that Michael and Ann's son Edward was buried there. Unfortunately, there is no stone left there that bears his name. I was told that many of the headstones were removed in the mid 1900's because of a clean up of the cemetery. All the stones that were broken or unreadable were discarded (real shame if you ask me). I have surmised that Michael and his wife are also buried there and this was my reasoning:
Michael and Anna's son Edward died at the age of 23 and was buried at the Xavier Cemetery (which was only about 1 mile from the Purtell homestead). I cannot imagine a mother losing her son and not wanting to be buried next to him after she passed away and I cannot imagine Michael not wanting to be buried next to his wife. Unfortunately, the church records do not have information on Michael and Ann's death or burial.
Here is what information I received from the St. Xavier's Church records:
-Edward Purtell - Died October 6, 1949 - age 64 - buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
-Mary Purtell - (1) Baptism, date not recorded;
-2) Deaths: Mary Purtell died April 19, 1935 - age 83;
Mary Purtell died April 15, 1872 - age 26 - buried St. Francis Xavier Cem.

-Michael Purtell - missing information
-Michael Edward Purtell - born December 18, 1884
Father Stephen Purtell; Mother Mary Anna Walsh
-Stephen Purtell - died January 2, 1939 - age 90
-Stephen Purtell - married Mary Walsh - November 26, 1880
-Stephen Purtell - born November 11, 1873

This information was supplied to me by Katherine Keenan of the St. Francis Xavier Church. She is very helpful and a wonderful lady.
Anyway, I hope this helps. If you have any information that I didn't list here, I would very much appreciate your sharing that with me so that I may update my records. Thanks, Ric Chrysler (email@example.com)
