Mark, In all research there is what we can know and what we guess. Sometimes the two blend together.
Robert PURVINES middle name is Gordon ... sighted by my cousin on a marriage certificate.
I know that his father and mother were Thomas PURVINES and Matilda GORDON. I have assumed that this Thomas PURVINES is the Thomas you mentioned, who died in 1894. There does not seem to be any other candidate.I have no idea whether this Thomas and matilda were married here or came married, since I can't find any reference to them on the normal shipping reocrds.
Re. Damaris. Her name is spelt as many ways as possible. She was born Damaris QUARTERMAIN and identified as a MALE!!! She was Christened Dimitri. On the various listing of bthe births and deaths of her children her name is spelt as follows .... Davuarua, Damarus, Demarius, Damris, Demtries, Demetries and Damaris. Her grandmother's name was Damaris, and she had two nieces called Damaris.
Could you explain (again?) how you and your mother fit into the GORDON tree.
