I am trying to fill some holes in my great grandmother's branch of the family tree. Her name was Emma Annie Rhoda Caddell. She was born in Navarro County in 1857. Her oldest sister was Sarah Jane Caddell. She was born in 1853, probably in Navarro County also. The sisters' parents were William Jay Caddell and Nancy Amanda Bright Caddell. When their mother died in 1865, the children were parceled out to various relatives. My ggrandmother was sent to their grandmother Caddell in Bell County, while Sarah Jane and another sister, Martha, stayed in Navarro County with their Bright relatives.
The only information we have on Sarah Jane is: 1. her birth date, 4 Sept 1853; 2. she married William Puryear in 1872 (no place given); 3. they had one daughter, Lena (no date) 4. something happened to William 5. Sarah Jane married John Messer (no date or place) 6. they had 3 girls (nicknames, no dates) 7. Sarah Jane died 3 Apr 1895
I have found 16 year old Sarah Jane and her grandmother, Eleanor Crabb Drane Bright, in the 1870 census living in the household of J.J. Boyd and his wife (Sarah Jane's aunt), Eleanor Drane Bright Boyd. Of course, these people are all recored in initials and the only reason I can give the names is because I have a score sheet and know the players.
"Two doors down" was a Puryear family with 19 year old son, W.P., who was born in Kentucky. The head of the household was H.R. Puryear (a preacher) with his wife, C., and 3 younger children who were born in Texas. Is this W.P. the man who married Sarah Jane? What do all the initials stand for? Does anyone know anything about the child, Lena?
I sure could use some help with completing our Puryear page. I have the other 2 sisters fully covered, but I have hit a brick wall with Puryear. Anything you can tell me would be very appreciated. When the census uses nothing but initials it can make genealogical research so much more difficult!
