Funeral services were conducted from St. Joseph Catholic Church at 9:30 A M Wednesday morning for Mrs. Leoval Meche, 76 years of age, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Tenas Arceneaux at 5:20A M Tuesday morning.September 14, following an illness of 3 months duration dating back to an automobile accident on July 3, when she sustained the injuries which later contributed to her death.
Mrs Meche was returning to the home of her daughter, Mrs Armond Richard in Grand Chenier on July 3, after a visit with relatives here, when the car in which she was driving collided with a truck near Welsh.She was returned to Rayne, and after apparently recovering, went back to Grand Chenier to complete her stay.Her condition steadily grew worse, and she came back to Rayne three weeks ago to be with her daughter, Mrs Tenas (Laura) Arceneaux, and other relatives in this community.In spite of all possible medical attention, she did not respond to treatment, and a week preceding her death, her children who had gathered to be in constant attendance upon her, realized that she could not survive the combined injuries and her advanced age.
The remains lay in state at the Tanas Arceneaux home throughout the day Tuesday and until the hour set for the funeral Wednesday, hundreds of friends visiting the home and attending the last services at St. Joseph Church to pay last tribute to the memory of a loved mother who had been called to her just Heavenly reward.
Rev. L C Habetz officiated during the services and his brief sermon, expressed condolence to the family to the family through praising the many virtues of the deceased woman.Her six sons, all with families of their own, served as pallbearers and carried with tender care and infinite pains the casket bearing their beloved mother to her last resting place in the Arceneaux Cemetery, north of Rayne.A large cortege of family and friends accompanied the funeral hearse on its journey to the cemetery.The staff of the Ardoin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs Josephine Bearb Meche was born north of Crowley on November 10, 1861, her parents being the former Miss Louise Quibodeaux and William M Bearb.In 1881, she became the bride of Leoval Meche, and to this union 12 children were born, eleven of whom survived.All of her family was born and reared in Acadia Parish, and with little exception, have remained in this community.Her husband preceded her in death 13 years ago, having passed away March 25, 1924.
She is survived by one sister Helen Dugas, two half sisters Mrs. Julie Wonder and Miss Francois Bearb; and two brothers Joseph Bearb and Louis Bearb; five daughters: Mrs Freddie Arceneaux, Mrs Waddy Arceneaux, Mrs Tenas Arceneaux, Mrs Lennie Arceneaux all of this section, and Mrs Armond Richard of Grand Chenier; and six sons, Homer, William, Eddie, Louis, Odele, and Ned Meche, all of this vicinity.In addition she is survived by 70 grand children and 33 great grandchildren.
